Chinese New Year
The first day of the Chinese lunar year begins with the family gathering to pay ritual homage to their ancestors, and to heaven and earth. The gathering serves to acknowledge that life is centered around one’s parents, heaven and earth; and that gratitude, respect and love are vital in the continuity of life and traditions. Elders and married couples give children and unmarried adults ang pow (red packets containing ‘lucky money’), an act that is supposed to bestow good luck on both the giver and the recipient.
